Data from this study show that the chalazal cyst is a consistent feature of the Brassicaceae that exhibits variation of potential taxonomic value. The U-shaped seeds of mustards comprise three development chambers: micropylar (MC), central (CC), and chalazal (ChC). Early in seed development the syncytial endosperm in the ChC becomes differentiated into a cyst that remains distinct from storage endosperm. In early syncytial stages, the cyst is stratified into three zones: (1) an apical zone containing nuclei, plastids and mitochondria, (2) a mid-zone rich in endomembranes but depleted of large organelles, and (3) a basal portion that is bordered by a labyrinthine wall. The basal zone has projections that range from foot-like extensions to thread-like haustoria that penetrate the underlying maternal chalazal proliferative tissues (CPT). No cell-to-cell connections occur between endosperm and maternal tissue, but the extensive labyrinthine walls closely invest cell lysate resulting from degradation of the CPT. Structural data from light, confocal and transmission electron microscopy suggest that the cyst is active in uptake and transport of metabolites into the developing seed. Four types of cyst reflecting position and size of the ChC are recognized. In general, they correlate with major tribes of Brassicaceae. Data support recent molecular studies indicating that classification of the Lepidieae is artificial and suggest that Thlaspi is a candidate for realignment. The most divergent morphology in a tribe is seen in the two species of the Hesperidae. Erysimum has a more typical chalazal chamber and cyst morphology while the tubular chalazal chamber and filiform cyst of Chorispora is of the most extreme type encountered in the survey. Genotypic variability was studied in two Mediterranean grass species, Bromus erectus and Dactylis glomerata , with regard to the response to CO2 of leaf total non-structural carbohydrate concentration ([TNC]lf), specific leaf area (SLA), and leaf carbon and nitrogen concentrations ([C]lf and [N]lf, respectively). Fourteen genotypes of each species were grown together on intact soil monoliths at ambient and elevated CO2 concentrations (350 and 700 μmol mol−1, respectively). In both species, the most consistent effect of elevated CO2 was an increase in [TNC]lf and a decrease in leaf nitrogen concentration when expressed either as total dry mass [Nm]lf, structural dry mass [Nmst]lf or leaf area [Na]lf. The SLA decreased only in D. glomerata , due to an accumulation of total non-structural carbohydrates and to an increase in leaf density. No genotypic variability was found for any variable in B. erectus , suggesting that genotypes responded in a similar way to elevated CO2. In D. glomerata , a genotypic variability was found only for [Cst], [Nm]lf, [Nmst]lf and [Na]lf. Since [Nm]lf is related to plant growth and is a strong determinant of plant–herbivore interactions, our results suggest evolutionary consequences of elevated CO2 through competitive interactions or herbivory.  相似文献

SUMMARY.
  • 1 The factors that control the concentrations of pigments in lake sediments are examined using data from (i) transects across lake basins, (ii) surface samples from logographic and atrophic lakes, and (iii) two 210Pb-dated short cores. Methods for the rapid non-chromatographic analysis of percent native chlorophyll and the blue-green algal pigments oscillaxanthin and myxoxanthophyll are described.
  • 2 The concentrations of chlorophyll derivatives, total arytenoids, oscillaxanthin and myxoxanthophyll, and percent native chlorophyll, are higher under conditions along the transects favorable for preservation. Chlorophyll degrades at about the same rate as total carotenoids, and oscillaxanthin degrades at about the same rate as myxoxanthophyll. Therefore, both the ratio of chlorophyll to arytenoids (CD/TC) and the ratio of oscillaxanthin to myxoxanthophyll (OSC/MYX) are mostly determined by the quality of autochthonous production rather than by preservation conditions.
  • 3 CD/TC values are higher in logographic lakes than in atrophic lakes, apparently as a result of differences in production of the two pigment types. Calculations show that CD/TC shifts in these two cores cannot be a record of the allochthonous-autochthonous Baltic in the systems. Instead, the CD/TC values shift with large changes in the kinds of plants dominating primary production.
  • 4 The stratigraphy of percent native chlorophyll appears to record the hypohmnetic oxygen concentrations at the time of deposition.
  • 5 No obvious reason exists why a eutrophic lake should produce more pigment per gram organic matter than should an oligotrophic lake. However, several correlated mechanisms tend to produce higher sedimentary pigment concentrations in eutrophic lakes. Most of these mechanisms, such as hypolimnetic oxygen consumption, indirectly translate greater primary productivity into greater sedimentary pigment concentration. Therefore, pigment concentrations are sometimes misleading, and pigment accumulation rate may be a better indicator of past primary production.

Photoreceptors of Bryozoan Larvae (Cheilostomata, Cellularioidea)   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
The ultrastructure of potential photoreceptors in larvae of Tricellaria occidentalis and four species of Bugula is described and compared with previously reported photoreceptors in larvae of Bugula neritina and Scrupocellaria bertholetti. A single sensory cell forms the functional unit of each photoreceptor. This cell is distinguished by a concentration of pigment vesicles in its apical part, a direct connection with the nervous system, and a large number of cilia that form the photoreceptoral organelle. These cilia have axonemes morphologically identical to those of motile cilia. The membranes of sensory cilia are unbeaded and qualitatively less osmophilic than those of the motile cilia of adjacent accessory and coronal cells. Three photoreceptor types are designated based on topological complexity: Type I, in which the sensory cell is flush with adjacent coronal cells and the photoreceptoral organelle is unprotected; Type II, in which the apical surface of the sensory cell is invaginated, forming a lumen containing the photoreceptoral organelle; and Type III, in which the sensory cell is at the base of an epidermal invagination and the photoreceptoral organelle is protected in a lumen formed by the sensory cell and accessory cells. There is a greater range of morphological variation among photoreceptors in larvae of Bugula spp. than between those of two species of the related genera Scrupocellaria and Tricellaria.  相似文献

Several pre-existing anterior and posterior dental bridge models using Finite elements and the new ceramic material In-Ceram have been developed. The mechanical behaviour of these models has been compared with optimised profiles obtained from a newly developed evolutionary algorithm known as Evolutionary Structural Optimisation (ESO).

The results show that the mechanical behaviour of the bridges was mainly restricted by the properties of the porcelain veneer and the design of the bridges themselves. For the case of the anterior bridge, it was found that there existed a specific thickness of veneer that minimised the maximum principal stress. This was related to peak stresses that occurred at the bridge surface. Peak stresses also occurred in the material interface between the In-Ceram and the veneer. These extreme stresses were attributed to the notch size and shape. For the case of the posterior bridge, it was concluded that the shape of the bottom of the Pontic tooth is crucial in reducing the magnitude of the maximum principal tensile stress. The ESO process produced bridge designs which have uniformly stressed bridge surfaces, and which also have significantly lower maximum principal tensile stresses compared to the pre-existing designs (up to 44%).  相似文献

Ants were studied on Puerto Rico and 44 islands surrounding Puerto Rico. Habitat diversity was the best predictor of the number of species per island and the distributions of species followed a nested subset pattern. The number of extinctions per island was low, approximately 1–2 extinctions per island in a period of 18 years, and the rates of colonization seem to be greater than the extinction rates. Ant dynamics on these islands do not seem to support the basic MacArthur and Wilson model of island biogeography. The MacArthur and Wilson equilibrium is based on the notion that species are interchangeable, but some extinctions and colonizations can change the composition and number of species drastically.  相似文献

Salinity tolerance can be attributed to three different mechanisms: Na+ exclusion from the shoot, Na+ tissue tolerance and osmotic tolerance. Although several key ion channels and transporters involved in these processes are known, the variation in expression profiles and the effects of these proteins on Na+ transport in different accessions of the same species are unknown. Here, expression profiles of the genes AtHKT1;1, AtSOS1, AtNHX1 and AtAVP1 are determined in four ecotypes of Arabidopsis thaliana. Not only are these genes differentially regulated between ecotypes, the expression levels of the genes can be linked to the concentration of Na+ in the plant. An inverse relationship was found between AtSOS1 expression in the root and total plant Na+ accumulation, supporting a role for AtSOS1 in Na+ efflux from the plant. Similarly, ecotypes with high expression levels of AtHKT1;1 in the root had lower shoot Na+ concentrations, due to the hypothesized role of AtHKT1;1 in retrieval of Na+ from the transpiration stream. The inverse relationship between shoot Na+ concentration and salinity tolerance typical of most cereal crop plants was not demonstrated, but a positive relationship was found between salt tolerance and levels of AtAVP1 expression, which may be related to tissue tolerance.  相似文献
